Barbara’s Bulletin #13: A Little Cold?
A few weeks ago Adam came down with something. We noticed that he wasn’t feeling well on a Saturday and we were hoping it was something he could kick quickly. He had these coughing fits that would come and go. He would go an hour without a single cough and then suddenly break out in a sneezing and coughing fit. We spent Saturday morning just relaxing but then once dinnertime rolled around he suddenly had tons of energy and wanted to play and run around.
I took Adam’s temperature before bed and it was a little high. Then Bob and I both kind of got a little paranoid and kept checking his temperature, first it was 99.8, then 100.4, then down to 99.5. Once the panic wore off, I did what a logical parent would do and gave Adam some medicine (which did bring his temperature back to normal).
The big problem looming over the horizon was what to do about school. Bob called the school Monday morning and we were told that Adam couldn’t come back to school unless he had a negative Covid test. So we called his doctor and made an appointment to come in Tuesday morning and get tested.
The school helped us log in and set Adam up to do school online so he wouldn’t be marked absent. So from Monday to Wednesday Adam got to be a “friend at home”. I wasn’t sure what to expect when we logged in for class. They have students spaced out in the gym and the teacher has to teach the kids in the class as well as the kids at home.
I was glad to be involved and watch Adam’s kindergarten class. I got to see the teacher in action and see all of Adam’s classmates. I was completely blown away by Adam’s teacher. It was amazing how she divided her attention between the kids who were actually in the class and the kids who were taking the class at home.
I hate to say it but things didn’t exactly go that great on my end. I was dividing myself between Adam and Lydia while Bob was upstairs resting up for his nightshift. By Tuesday Lydia started to come down with the same cold that Adam had and she was being a real terror. Adam did well with school at first but he couldn’t last the whole day. We ended up just doing the morning sessions and then not logging back in after the lunch break.
We got Adam’s Covid results first thing Thursday morning. We weren’t surprised to hear that they were negative since Adam’s doctor thought it was pretty pointless to even test him for Covid in the first place. Then we asked the doctor to fax a letter over to the school to let them no that Adam was safe to come back. Thankfully the school received the fax with literally minutes to spare and we put Adam on the bus.
I told Bob that maybe next time Adam is sick we won’t even bother with the home schooling. Shouldn’t kids who are home sick be resting and not worrying about school? Could a few missed classed really put Adam that far behind?
Wishing you all good health and negative Covid Tests.
XOXOXOXO
